If you haven’t heard yet…yes, they have it in place now! Amtrak is offering a residency for writers. ON A TRAIN. Can you think of a better place to have a residency? A better place to sit and write? Maybe private beachside in Hawaii, yeah, but realistically–even that would be sandy and a little hot at times. This is what they say:
“#AmtrakResidency was designed to allow creative professionals who are passionate about train travel and writing to work on their craft in an inspiring environment. Round-trip train travel will be provided on an Amtrak long-distance route. Each resident will be given a private sleeper car, equipped with a desk, a bed and a window to watch the American countryside roll by for inspiration.”
Can you imagine? Oh, I want to go. SO.MUCH. I’ve been dreaming of taking a long distance train trip just like this and kicking back with my laptop and knocking out one or more of my projects. SIGH. A girl can dream? I’m betting they will have over a hundred thousand entries, so yeah, not much of a chance. But I did enter! I’m hoping the program will be a success and this will be something writers can purchase in the future. (yeah, I’ll be onboard for that–hardee har).

So, if you could take a train ride somewhere in the USA, where would it be? for me, it would be either across the desert or up in the PNW. I would love to watch the stars in the desert from a sleeper. That would be pretty amazing, I think.
